The UA ADVANCE program initiatives were based on findings from current research on equity and the advancement of scientific careers. From these findings we developed a three-tiered strategy for improving the representation and advancement of women faculty in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) departments that aimed to:
- Increase the number of female scientists in leadership positions by fostering the development of social capital through networking, collaboration, and mentoring with local, national, and international scientific communities.
- Define new expectations for the stewardship of faculty careers through programs aimed at faculty leaders, administrators, and departmental groups.
- Eradicate inequitable practices through development of persuasive transformational technologies to gradually change attitudes while directly changing the way business is done at the university.
Each tier described above was represented by a workgroup and associated set of interventions. Specific information about each workgroup can be found by clicking on the above links.
